千羽鶴は、折り紙で作った1000羽の鶴を、糸でつないだものである。
「羽」という漢字は翼を意味するが、ここでは翼の数ではなく鳥の数として用いられている。
元々は厳密に1000羽ではなく、数が多いことを示していたが、実際に1000羽であると考える人が多い。
病気や災害などの不幸があったときに、回復や復興への祈りを込めて作られることが多い。
ただし、実用的ではないのに、処分するのは負担になるため、ありがたくないと考える人もいる。

戦前は、千羽鶴は願いを叶えてもらう際の供物として、神社に奉納されていた。

災害時の千羽鶴
地震や洪水などの災害が起こると、避難所に千羽鶴が送られてくることがある。
これに対して、限りある輸送やスペースのキャパシティを、直接的には役に立たない千羽鶴で消費するべきではないという批判がある。
皮肉な反論としては、物資の準備や心構えが不十分な人が被災地に行って迷惑をかけるよりは、自宅で鶴を折って送るだけの方がマシであるという意見もある。
というのも、物資が不足している中、自身のための飲み物や食料を持たずに現地へ行き、さらに自己満足のために被災者の感情を傷つけるボランティアが近年、問題となっているからである。

What is senba-zuru?
Senba-zuru means a thousand paper cranes made by folding papers, connected with strings.
The Chinese character “羽” means wing and, here, it is used for the number of birds, not for the number of wings.
Originally, “thousand” indicates the largeness of the number, not indicating exactly 1000 birds; however, many people think it means 1000 birds in fact.
It is often made with praying for recovery or reconstruction when someone has been suffering from miserly such as a disease or disaster.
Note that some people consider senba-zuru is unwelcome because it is not practical and we feel burdened when we discard it.

A crane is a symbol of longevity in Japan, which is said to live for 1000 years according to a legend.
Prior to WW2, senba-zuru was dedicated to a shrine as an altarage for granting the desire.
Currently, it is often given to a patient directly.
In addition, it has become a symbol of peace derived from a story that Sadako Sasaki, a girl who was exposed to radiation in WW2 folded paper cranes wishing for the recovery from atomic bomb disease.
Sometimes, it is given to an athlete or a sports team to convey the feelings that he or she hopes for the victory.
How to fold a paper crane
A paper crane can be made in about 20 steps depending on how to count.

Because paper crane is a well-known origami work, probably, most Japanese people have folded it many times in the kindergarten or elementary school.
Folding it is relatively easy, and many people can fold it without referring to anything even after he or she has grown up.
Senba-zuru in a disaster
When a disaster including an earthquake or flooding occurs, sometimes, senba-zuru is sent to a shelter.
That may be criticized on the ground that limited capacity for transportation or space should not be consumed for senba-zuru, which is not useful directly.
As an ironic answer for it, some people think folding cranes in the house and sending them is a bit better compared with those who are not well-prepared materially or mentally visiting the affected area and causing troubles.
This is because recently there is a problem that some volunteers visit the region without having drink or food for them although the region is short of materials, and further hurt the feeling of the victims for self-satisfaction.
