土下座とは、両膝と額が地面や床に接するようにする、謝罪の際の姿勢である。
本来は、身分が高い人の通行に遭遇した際に、身分の低い者が取った姿勢である。
現代社会では、土下座を要求するほどの身分の差は一般には存在せず、また、謝罪で行われることも稀である。
そのため、日本人であっても、正しい土下座の方法を知らないことが多い。
著者のこれまでの人生では、小さなことを大げさに扱うジョークの一種を除けば、実際に土下座して謝罪している人を見たことはない。
座礼との違い
葬式などの儀式や武道では、畳や板の間に正座（※）し、両手をついて礼をすることがある。
（※正座：床に直接座る座り方で、膝を曲げ、両足のかかとの上に尻を載せる。）
このような礼を座礼といい、土下座と似た姿勢をとるが、土下座とは異なる。
座礼はもっぱら清浄な室内で行われ、頭は下げるが、額を床にはつけない。
土下座の強要
マンガやドラマなどで、謝罪を要求する者が、相手に屈辱を与えるため、または自分と相手の立場の違いを強調するため、土下座を命じることがある。
このような行為は、日本の法律では犯罪となる場合がある。
2013年に女が、衣料品店で購入したものに不良品があったとして、店員に土下座で謝罪することを要求した。
女は土下座した店員を写した写真をtwitterにアップロードし、このツイートは注目された。
店員は被害届を出し、女は逮捕された。
土下座を表すエモティコン
土下座を意味する顔文字の例としては、<(_ _)> および m(_ _)m が挙げられる。
<および>は肘、mは手を表しており、いずれも両手を地面につき、頭を下げた様子を示している。
謝罪ではなく、感謝を伝えるために用いられることもある。
orzは土下座を横から見たように見えるが、失意によりくずおれた様子を示しており、土下座としてはあまり使われない。
土下座外交
土下座は、理不尽を含んでいたとしても相手を正しいと認め、相手の要求に従うことを示唆する姿勢である。
このことから、他国の要求に容易に応じ、自国民の利益が損なわれるような外交方針を、土下座外交ということがある。
焼き土下座
焼き土下座とは、福本伸行の人気マンガ／アニメ作品である『賭博黙示録カイジ』に登場する、非常に過酷な架空の土下座の方法である。
この方法は、炭火で熱した鉄板の上で、両手、両足および額のすべてを10秒以上鉄板に接触させることにより、謝罪の気持ちを示すものである。

What is dogeza?
Dogeza is a posture for an apology in which the knees and the forehead touch the ground or floor.
Originally, dogeza had been a posture that people of lower rank had performed when they encountered the passing by of people of higher rank.
In contemporary society, usually, there is not so much difference between ranks that requires dogeza, and dogeza is rarely performed for an apology.
That is why many people do not know how to perform dogeza in an appropriate manner even though he or she is Japanese.
In the author’s life, I have never seen someone apologizing with the posture of dogeza in reality, except for a kind of joke in which a tiny thing is handled with exaggeration.
Difference between dogeza and bowing in a sitting position
In some ceremonies such as funerals or some martial arts, bowing may be done while seated in a seiza-sitting (*) position on the tatami or wooden floor and with his or her hands put on the floor.
(* seiza: a way of sitting directly on the floor such that the knees are folded and the hip is put on both of the heels.)
Such a bowing is called zarei (bowing in a sitting position), the posture of which is similar to that of dogeza; however, zarei is different from dogeza.
Zarei is performed only in a clean room, and while the head moves downward, the forehead does not touch the floor.
Imposing dogeza
In a cartoon, drama etc., those who require apology sometimes mandate the other perform dogeza in order to humiliate the other or to emphasize the difference between the positions of them.
Such an action may be regarded as a crime according to the laws in Japan.
In 2013, a woman required a clothing shop staff member to apologize in the posture of dogeza, insisting what she had bought included a defective product.
She uploaded the photo of the staff member in the posture of dogeza to Twitter and the tweet drew attention.
The staff member filed the victim report and the woman was arrested.
Emoticons indicating dogeza
The examples meaning dogeza include <(_ _)> and m(_ _)m .
< and > indicate an elbow respectively and m indicates a hand, and both of the emoticons indicate the appearance of bowing with both hands placed on the ground.
They are sometimes used not to convey an apology but to convey thankfulness.
orz looks like dogeza seen from the side; however, it indicates a collapsing person due to a disappointment and rarely used as dogeza.
Kowtow diplomacy
Dogeza is a posture implying that he or she admits the opponent is right and obeys the demand of the opponent even though the opponent is somewhat irrational.
Thus, the diplomatic policy that may meet the demand of other countries easily to damage the interests of the people in the nation is sometimes called kowtow (dogeza) diplomacy.
Dogeza while being baked
Dogeza while being baked is an extremely cruel fictional style of dogeza, featured in the popular cartoon/animation, “Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji”, drawn by Nobuyuki Fukumoto.
In this style, a person makes all of his or her hands, lower legs and forehead touch on a griddle heated by charcoal fire for more than 10 seconds to express the feeling of apology.
