Watashi-bashi or bridging chopsticks means placing the chopsticks on a dish or bowl, especially across the rim of a bowl during a meal or when a meal is finished.
This is thought to be one of bad manners. It is proper to place the chopsticks on the chopstick rest.
Although many Japanese know watashi-bashi is a bad manner, they dare to do it.
This is because many restaurants, except exclusive restaurants, don’t provide chopstick rests.
Usually, guests take chopsticks from the case on the table, or disposable chopsticks covered with paper are provided.
The advantage of watashi-bashi is that the tips of chopsticks don’t contact the table.
Many Japanese are fastidious about cleanliness.
The tips of chopsticks are the portion which enters their mouth.
The table may be unwashed because the staff hasn’t wiped enough.
Thus, they have no choice but to do it when no chopstick rest is provided.
