甲子園とは
甲子園とは、西日本にある阪神甲子園球場で行われる、日本の高校野球の全国大会の通称である。
毎年春と夏に開催され、前者は選考委員会が選出した学校が出場し、後者は地方予選を勝ち上がった学校が出場する。
特に後者は、約4000校の頂点を決める大会であり、夏を象徴する行事であると考える人もいる。
阪神甲子園球場はプロ野球チーム、阪神タイガースの本拠地であるが、高校野球での使用が優先される。
そのため、阪神タイガースは甲子園の開催期間は、他の球団の本拠地などで試合を行う。
甲子園の注目度
高校野球は課外活動の一種であるが、文化部や他の運動部と比較し、メディアで紹介される機会が圧倒的に多い。
甲子園の各試合は、テレビおよびインターネットで中継される。
甲子園は春夏いずれも約2週間の日程が組まれ、春は約50万人、夏は約80万人の観客を動員する。
甲子園は、日本で最も注目されるアマチュアスポーツの大会かもしれない。
甲子園と髪型
課外活動で野球部に所属している生徒は、丸刈りであることが多い。
これを見て、軍隊や刑務所のようだと思う人もいる。
日本のプロ野球選手は、全員が丸刈りにしているわけではない。
ある調査によると、甲子園に出場した学校のうち、9割以上の学校で生徒は丸刈りだったという。
甲子園の規則では髪型を制限していないため、各学校の野球部が生徒に丸刈りを課していると思われる。
ただし、髪を染めることや眉を細く整えることについては、甲子園を運営する日本高等学校野球連盟により、禁止する通達が出されたことがある。
甲子園に関する問題
甲子園に選手として出場できるのは、男子のみと定められている。
野球部には練習を手伝うスタッフとして女子生徒が所属している場合があるが、試合中にグラウンドに入ることはできない。
彼女らがグラウンドに入れるのは大会前に行われる練習時間に限られ、さらに、入れる場所はグラウンドの一部に制限されている。
こうした規定は前時代的であるとして、批判の声が上がっている。
また、応援に関する問題もある。
球場のスタンドで、吹奏楽部が楽器を演奏して野球部を応援することが多い。
吹奏楽部のコンテストと甲子園の日程が重なり、ある高校の吹奏楽部は、コンテストより甲子園を優先した。
吹奏楽部の部員には、コンテストに出たかったと涙した者もいたという。
甲子園に関する伝統
甲子園に出場した野球部は、自分たちに試合が終わった後に、甲子園のグラウンドの土を持ち帰る風習がある。
持って帰った土は、記念にとっておいたり、選手が世話になった人やベンチに入れなかった部員に配ったりする。
あるいは、母校のグラウンドに撒く場合もある。
他の分野の大会
甲子園の知名度の高さから、日本一を決める大会を、他の分野でも甲子園の名を冠して呼ぶことがある。
例えば、高校生を対象にした全国規模のマンガのコンクールに、まんが甲子園と呼ばれるものがある。
甲子園球場との関係はない。
また、大学日本一を決めるアメリカンフットボールの決勝戦を、甲子園ボウルという。こちらは、甲子園球場で行われる。

What is the Koshien?
The Koshien is another name of the nationwide tournament in baseball for high school in Japan, which is held at the Hanshin Koshien Stadium located in western Japan.
The Koshien is held in spring and summer every year. The schools selected by the selected committee participate in the former, and the schools which got through the regional tournaments participate in the latter.
Especially, the latter is the tournament which determines the top of about 4000 schools, and some people think the Koshien is the symbolic event of summer.
Although the Hanshin Koshien Stadium is the home stadium of a professional baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers, the use for high school baseball has priority.
Therefore, the Hanshin Tigers plays games at the home stadiums of other teams etc. during the period which the Koshien has been held.
How much attention does the Koshien draw
High school baseball is a kind of extracurricular activity, which has overwhelmingly much chance of being introduced in media compared with non-athletic clubs or other sports clubs.
Each game of the Koshien is broadcast on TV and Internet.
The Koshien in both spring and summer are scheduled for about two weeks, and about 500 thousand audience attends the spring one and about 800 thousand audience attends the summer one.
The Koshien may be the most attention-getting amateur sports contest in Japan.
The Koshien and hair style
Many students who belong to a baseball club for an extracurricular activity have shaved heads.
Some people think they look as if they were military or prisoners when they see such students.
Not all of professional baseball players in Japan have shaved heads.
According to a survey, at more than 90% of schools among schools which participated the Koshien, the students have shaved heads.
Because the hair style is not regulated by the rules of the Koshien, their shaved heads are thought to be imposed on the students by the baseball club of each school.
Nevertheless, Japan High School Federation, which organizes the Koshien, has notified that coloring hair and shaping eyebrows were forbidden.
Problems on the Koshien
It is prescribed that the players who can play in the Koshien are restricted to boys.
Some baseball clubs have female students as staff who helps with the training; however, the girls cannot enter the field during a match.
They can only enter the field during the practice time provided before the tournament. Further, the area they can enter is restricted to a part of the field.
Criticism is voiced that such regulations are obsolete.
In addition, there are problems on cheering.
A wind band often plays instruments to cheer the baseball club on the stand of the stadium.
When a wind band contest and the Koshien were scheduled on the same day, the wind band club at a high school prioritized the Koshien over the contest.
Some members of the wind band club were said to shed tears because they wanted to participate in the contest.
Tradition on the Koshien
There is a custom that the baseball club members who participate in the Koshien take the dirt from the field of the Koshien stadium after their matches are completed.
The dirt they took home is retained as a memento, or given to those who have taken care of the players or the members who could not become even substitutions.
Otherwise, the dirt may be scattered on the field of their school.
Competition in other fields
Because the Koshien has a high profile, some championships determining the best team or player in Japan may be called a name which is named after the Koshien although they are in other fields.
For example, a nationwide cartoon contest intended for high school students is called the Manga Koshien.
It has nothing to do with the Koshien stadium.
Further, the final match of American football determining the strongest university team in Japan is called the Koshien Bowl, which is held at Koshien Stadium.
