Observation indicates looking an object carefully to determine the truth of something. Sherlock Holmes criticized Watson that he only saw but did not observe, on the ground that he did not know how many steps there are of the stairs he had walked up and down so many times.
観察は、物事の真理を見極めるために対象物をよく見ることを指す。何度も上り下りした階段の段数を知らないワトソンに対して、シャーロック・ホームズは、見ているだけで観察していないと評している。
thermometer / 温度計 おんどけい ondokei
A thermometer is a gauge used for measuring a temperature, such as an atmospheric temperature. In Japan, degree Celcius is used for the unit of temperature. Thermometers for measuring a body temperature are usually called taionkei (clinical thermometer).
温度計は、気温など温度を測定するために用いる計器のこと。日本では、温度の単位としてセルシウス度が用いられる。体温を測るための温度計は、通常、体温計と呼ばれる。
